Spring in Japan is something very special, and cherry blossom season - known as Sakura - is the star of the show. From late March to early April (depending on the region and weather patterns), the cherry trees explode into pink and white blooms. It is a sight to behold!
Locals and visitors come together for Hanami, the tradition of enjoying the blossoms, often with picnics under the trees. Think of bento boxes of food, a relaxed vibe, and a festive atmosphere all around. It’s one of those "stop and soak it in" moments that Japan does so well, celebrating how beautiful and fleeting spring time can be.
We were lucky enough to visit Japan ourselves during this special season in March 2023. Whether you’re exploring Tokyo’s buzzing city parks or Kyoto’s quiet, temple-filled streets, Sakura season is a must-see. Trust me, it’s worth planning a trip around it—you won’t forget it!
There are three ways to enjoy cherry blossom season - independent travel, small group tours, or luxury cruising. We chose independent travel since we limited ourselves to only 8 days. Japan is one of the most fascinating countries we’ve ever visited. The people are friendly, respectful and proud of their homeland. It’s also one of the safest places to visit and the public transportation is modern, clean and runs like clockwork!
Here's a recap of our experience.
For some of the best cherry blossom views in Tokyo, head to Chiyoda City—where it feels like the entire district is throwing a pink and white confetti party just for you! Everywhere you turn, it’s a picture-perfect explosion of spring vibes. 🌸
The Chidorigafuchi Moat surrounds Kitanomaru Park and the Imperial Palace Gardens. As we strolled along the paths lining the moat, we found ourselves under a delicate canopy of beautiful blossoming cherry trees. Even a cloudy day couldn’t dampen the spirit of the season (buy a cute umbrella from the many shops)! There was a graduation ceremony taking place nearby, and it was so special seeing the students wearing traditional kimonos. We suggest taking this wonderful walk before entering the park or the palace gardens.
The Imperial Palace East Gardens is a must see! Among the Edo-era architecture, stone walls, and traditional Japanese landscaping, clusters of cherry trees stood out beautifully with their soft blossoms. It was the perfect spot to soak in both history and natural beauty.
Only a short walk from the Chidorigafuchi Moat, the Yasukuni Shrine is worth a visit as the approach to the shrine is lined with cherry trees in full bloom. We found the solemnity of the shrine (commemorating Japan’s war dead) paired with the cheerful cherry blossoms to be a reflective place to take in the fleeting beauty of nature.
Kanda Myojin Shrine, a relatively small shrine known for its vibrant red gates and rich cultural significance, was a great example of how cherry trees are built into many aspects of Japanese heritage - they are everywhere.
In Tokyo’s buzzing Shibuya district, famous for its energy and urban flair, we discovered Yoyogi Park—the perfect chill spot to soak up more Sakura vibes. It’s like a peaceful pink oasis right in the middle of the action!
The open spaces were dotted with cherry trees in full bloom, while groups of friends and families spread picnic blankets under the trees, taking pictures under the canopy and just enjoying the moment. We joined as well, bringing snacks and beverages from a nearby convenience store (you must visit a Japanese 7-11 store), to enjoy the experience and the beauty of the Sakura. This is a must see!
Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden is a sprawling park in the center of Shinjuku City district of Tokyo and full of cherry trees. *Pro-tip: Be sure to book tickets in advance! We did, and joined many locals wandering through different gardens, each with its own charm. The Japanese Garden had picturesque bridges and ponds framed by Sakura trees, while the English Landscape Garden offered wide-open lawns dotted with blossoms. This garden was one of the highlights of our trip, so please do not miss this.
We enjoyed walking around Tokyo, and quickly discovered that, in addition to the beautiful parks, gardens and shrines, cherry blossoms can be appreciated nearly everywhere... including these beauties in the financial district near Tokyo’s Central Train Station. As an added bonus, there are beautiful shops and restaurants in this area for a quick break and recharge.
A visit to Tokyo would not be complete without a day trip to see the Kamakura Temple. We highly recommend a guided visit as there is much to see. I booked a private guide, Yoko, who met us at our hotel. She was delightful! We traveled by train and local bus to this beautiful area. In addition to the historical and spiritual significance of the temples, we also found a terrific cherry blossom experience.
Another advantage of a private guide - translation during shopping adventures! A little story for you: We were looking for small souvenirs and our daughter saw a small shop, full of antiques. Lo and behold, they had a precious stash of ancient Japanese scrolls (which our son collects)! We found a scroll from the Edo Period (1603 - 1868) and purchased this gem for a bargain, thanks to Yoko's help, as the shop keeper didn't speak English. If I only had room in my suitcase for 5 more scrolls....
Tokyo during cherry blossom season was unforgettable, and the combination of parks, gardens and cityscapes each had its own way of showcasing the fleeting beauty of Sakura. Nearly everywhere we went, the air was filled with the sweet scent of blossoms, while the falling petals created a natural confetti that seemed to celebrate the season. Truly a memorable experience.
Keep dreaming, keep exploring, and keep making memories.
